Just heard the very exciting news that UB40 have offered the original backing tracks for their classic ‘One in Ten’ for a rework and reissue just for Brum Music Month. I think something amazing could come out of this. A billion and twelve thanks to Jez Collins for pulling off such a coup and massive kudos to Brian Travers for coming to the party.

Giving Brum musicians the chance to get involved and become part of Birmingham Music heritage through this song is an amazing opportunity – can’t wait to see what comes of it.

This is not the official announcement or anything. I’m not even really here, and this is not my baby. But it’s exciting all the same.

    WATCH THIS SPACE.

Great news indeed, I should have the song parts in a couple of days.

But I’m not sure I can handle organising this alone, the scope has shifted from a simple remix to a massive collaberative reworking of a song. So if anyone knows any musicians who’d want to get involved, or have any other ideas, hit me up :)

First off, this is not up to one or two people to organise. Musical activity happens pretty much every day of the year in Brum, all we are saying is lets just brand June as Brum Music Month, tag activities as such and be a bit more imaginative where we place these activities.

At the very least I will post 30 videos, one a day on this site, I’d love to do 30 ‘heritage’ band songs and 30 contemporary bands.

But just look at this website and see the activity and breadth of people who already want to be involved in this, this is just a start, next year will be an improvement on this year, the year after better still etc.

UB40 are offering Brum Music Month an opportunity to re-imagine One In Ten, so perfect for this time with the BNP looking to make political gain out of rising unemployment, currently standing at 9.62% in the midlands, almost one in ten. Use your networks and let’s just do this and don’t worry about whether we succeed or fail, you are already doing it.

        Take it for what it is, spread the word and just enjoy it.;

          I couldn’t agree more Jezc.
Take it for what it is…tag activities, use your networks, gatecrash the party…if you can sing, play, rap, blow like an angel, if you are one of Birmingham finest you are on the guest list. James Welch is remixing UB40′s ‘One in Ten’ & possibly ‘ Can’t Help Falling in Love’ let him know you have a voice that needs to be heard.
Surely this is a great opportunity for not just musicians and performers to showcase their incredible talent during June but also for Birmingham’s young music business entrpreneur’s , PR’s, pluggers, agents , promoters to take an almost fully formed music story built on politic’s and passion and sell it to the world off Press,Radio and TV…Is’nt the growth of the music business infrastructure exactly what Birmingham needs to promote the wealth of talent that resides in the Holy City ?

    Remixers Step Forth!

Hi everyone, I was talking to Martin Fearn (@urbanfly) about sorting out a disc of remixes to join the Birmingham originals and covers compilations.

There’s a large number of brilliant electronic, dub, and dance producers in Birmingham, as well as bands who could be remixed.

So if anyone knows any bands or remixers that would be up for getting involved, get in touch!

If you’ve got any remixes you’d like to submit, I’ve got a soundcloud account at http://soundcloud.com/jameswelch/dropbox

or hit me up on twitter (@jwelch)

    Happy remixing!

I know Robin Giorno (Friendly Fire) would be good for a reggae re-work of something, and DJ Cro would be good to point at something in a hip hop style. Clutch is a masterful remixer, and Friends of the Stars had a Bentley Rhythm Ace remix done for them… so that could be a (remote) possibility. How about a Mike Skinner remix or Ian Wallman (a Brummie who’s remixed everyone from Shakira to Yoko Ono)…

Skinner’s posting parts to his tracks on twitter through bln.kr who have also agreed to host a remix site for my album, they’d probably be up for some kind of involvment…

Mike Bentley Rhythm Ace is my next-door-neighbour-but-one, hence the Friends of the Stars remix. I’ll ask him next time he pops round for a cup of sugar.

Do we think it should be only Brum bands being remixed, or are brum based remixers enough?

      • Martin 8:14 am on May 22, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Perhaps a list of Birmingham (from Birmingham, doesn’t need to have been based in Birmingham I think) bands is needed to see what remixers have to work with.

        I’ll get on it.

Hi there, i’m a local drum and bass/electronica producer/dj and would love to get involved in any way i can. Is there a link to download the UB40 stems yet? is there a list of available remix projects on here somewhere?
